In 2026, Eagle Valley Children’s Home proudly celebrates 80 years of uninterrupted service to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities across Northern Nevada. This milestone marks not just the passage of time, but a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering commitment to improving lives.

Our Origins: A Vision of Hope

Founded in 1946 by the Nevada Children’s Foundation, Inc., Eagle Valley Children’s Home began as a response to a pressing need—Nevada had no placement options for children with severe disabilities. A determined Reno mother, guided by love for her son with Down Syndrome, spearheaded the creation of a home that would offer specialized care and dignity to children like hers [1].

The original site, a 210-acre former guest ranch near Carson City, quickly transformed into a haven for 16 children under the compassionate leadership of Grace Koster, the first manager. With support from Nevada’s hotel and casino community, the mortgage was paid off within a year, and the foundation of a lasting legacy was laid.

What We Do: A Lifelong Commitment

Today, Eagle Valley Children’s Home is a fully accredited Intermediate Care Facility offering:

  • Residential Services: Individualized skill training, 24-hour nursing care, and therapies including medical, dental, nutritional, occupational, physical, and speech [2].

  • Respite Care Program: Established in 1985, this program provides in-home support to families caring for loved ones with developmental disabilities. It now serves over 60 families across Carson, Washoe, Lyon, and Douglas counties [3].

Our philosophy is person-centered, rooted in respect for each individual’s capabilities and civil rights. We’ve proudly maintained deficiency-free licensure surveys for nearly two decades [1].

Leadership & Legacy

Our success is built on the shoulders of extraordinary Executive Directors and a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors. Leaders like Donna Clarke, who began as a Recreation Coordinator and rose to Executive Director, exemplify the heart and soul of our mission [4]. Many staff members have served for decades, becoming pillars of continuity and care.

Looking Ahead: Celebrating 80 Years

As we prepare to honor this remarkable milestone, we’re dreaming big. Plans are underway to celebrate with our families, supporters, and community partners. Ideas are always welcome!

Together, we've built more than a facility - we've forged a legacy of resilience and unity, a testament to the strength of our community and the power of perseverance.
